چکیده

Take Home Message  Use of intramammary antimicrobial dry cow treatment (DCT) is fundamental for effective mastitis control but even with the use of DCT, about 2530% of cows may have quarters that maintain chronic intramammary infections across the dry period  Quarters with chronic intramammary infections have 4 times increased risk of having clinical mastitis in the current lactation as compared to uninfected cows  The evaluation of somatic cell count in fresh cows should not be performed until at least 5 days post-calving and the best use of these values may be to compare quarter SCC values between dry off and post-calving with the objective of identifying chronically infected quarters for potential interventions

Comparison of systemic and intramammary dry cow treatments Comparación de terapias sistémicas e intramamarias para el periodo seco en vacas lecheras

Objective. To compare four different dry cow treatments (DCT) and establish their effectiveness in reducing intramammary infections (IIM). Materials and methods. DCTs included systemic tylosin (12g) alone or accompanied by cefapirine intramammary infusions and or an internal teat sealant. A total number of 278 cows at the end of lactation period were randomly assigned to one of 4 dry cow treatm...

Dry cow therapy with a non-antibiotic intramammary teat seal - a review

: Dry cow antibiotic therapy is used to eliminate existing intramammary infections and to prevent new infections in the dry period. It is implemented as part of a total management system known as the 'Five-Point Plan' for mastitis control. Recent public concerns over the widespread prophylactic use of antibiotics, coupled with an increasing interest in organic farming, have lead to a re-evaluat...

Effects of dry cow treatment of beef cows on pathogenic organisms, milk somatic cell counts, and calf growth during the subsequent lactation.

Spring calving Angus and Angus x Hereford multiparous cows were utilized to determine the effects of intramammary treatment with penicillin G procaine (200,000 IU) and novobiocin (400 mg) at the time of weaning on udder health and calf growth after the subsequent calving. Cows were stratified by age and breed and assigned randomly to receive intramammary treatment (n = 99) at weaning or as untr...

The prophylactic effect of a dry-cow antibiotic against Streptococcus uberis.

The prophylactic use of a dry-cow antibiotic for reducing the incidence of mastitis due to Streptococcus uberis was studied in four seasonally calving dairy herds involving 378 cows. The treatment was a long-acting dry-cow antibiotic preparation administered immediately after the last milking of lactation. New intramammary infections were identified by comparing the bacteriological status of qu...

Effects of intramammary infection and parity on calf weaning weight and milk quality in beef cows.

The objectives of this study were to determine 1) the effect of intramammary infection on calf weaning weight, milk somatic cell count, and milk composition, and 2) the effect of parity on percentages of infected cows, infected quarters, and blind quarters. The number of infected quarters, milk somatic cell counts, milk components, and intramammary infection were studied at weaning in 164 beef ...
